PTA

If you haven't joined PTA yet, please consider doing so! Wilson's PTA puts on many great events throughout the school year and they also support both students and teachers in the classroom. For example, the PTA provides funds for transportation to and from all field trips! Here are some great pictures of the family movie night from two Fridays ago!

Working with Our Buddies

Last Friday we sucrssfully completed dot day. The Dot is the story of a caring teacher who dares a doubting student to trust in her own abilities by being brave enough to “make her mark”. What begins with a small dot on a piece of paper becomes a breakthrough in confidence and courage, igniting a journey of self-discovery and sharing, which has gone on to inspire countless children and adults around the globe. Here our some pictures of our class making their mark with their buddies. Students also wrote about how they would make their mark on Wilson this year.

Reading Workshop

For the past couple of weeks we have really been working on reading stamina. Students have been encouraged to read more and more everyday without having any distractions interrupt their reading. Students have gotten very good at this and can read up to 30 min independently without stopping!

In reading we have also been working on understanding what we read. Check out this classroom anchor chart that outlines strategies we have been practicing for comprehension.

Meeting Our Buddies

This year our buddy classroom will be Ms. Murphy's K-4 class. We will have buddies almost every Friday. Students did an awesome job helping their buddies draw a picture and write their name. Students were patient, kind and role models. A few classmates who have younger siblings even gave helpful hints and pointers on how to interact with 4 year olds!

Saving Fred

Another Collaboration and STEM activity.

Students were told that Fred (a gummy worm) needed to be saved because his boat (a cup) had been capsized. Students needed to put a life jacket (gummy life-saver) on Fred and flip his boat upright.... The truck however was students were not allowed to touch any of the materials with their hands. Students were given paper clips to complete their task.

Everyone saved Fred, learned that what they think is impossible may not be, and learned to work together to solve a problem!

Collaboration and STEM Activities

This past week we have been doing some really fun, hands-on activities that helped us learn about working together. These activities are also based on science, technology, engineering and mathematical practices!

One of the first activities we did was the "Army Men Launcher". Students were given various materials to build a contraption that could launch an army figurine the farthest. Students did a great job working as a team! And one army man was even launched 15 feet, not to mention another that soared high up into the air. Students may even want to have another "army man" challenge at home!
